$10,000 Dollar Man

$10,000 Dollar Man

The Canadian Cancer Society has set a date for their fundraiser gala of May 5th. I am the honorary Entertainment chairperson for this event and every year I sing a few songs to kick off the evening. Last year the event featured Sarah McLachlan as our special guest entertainment. Sarah was gracious and while visiting with her, I was struck by her genuine support for the cause. Her set was an amazing collection of hits and the crowd could not get enough of her.

This year the special guest has not been revealed yet but . . . the sad part is I am booked for May 5th already:(

I have a gig in Calgary that was already confirmed before the Canadian Cancer Society booked their venue for the same date. I can’t be in two places at once so I guess I’ll continue to hold the record of “Ten Thousand Dollar Man” (That’s how much an “Up close and Personal” concert by me was auctioned off for at the event last year.

Rockin with Jaded Ways

It was an “out of the blue” email I sent to marketing professional and copywriting expert, Michel Fortin that resulted in an impromtu jam session in Ottawa.

In my marketing business I have been following Michel Fortin’s blog. Michel lives in Ottawa and our band doesn’t get to Ottawa very often (let alone to play a free outdoor concert) so I took a chance and invited him to our show. He responded saying he would have loved to come but he had a gig. A gig? I didn’t know he was a musician. Turns out he is the drummer for a classic rock band called Jaded Ways.

After meeting him for coffee before our Winterlude show, I decided to surprise him and show up at his gig. I was invited up to do a few songs and we rocked. He is a great drummer and his band are classic rock pros. I was a little tired for the plane the next morning but we had fun.

Luckily the stage was heated and partially closed in but the gusts of cold snow and wind would still cause our guitars to go out of tune and our knuckles to stiffen up.

The stage was set on the frozen surface of the Rideau Canal where people were skating all afternoon during our soundcheck. Mick skated and so did Paxton (our guitar tech) but unfortunately I had to go searching for a new power supply for this computer. Roge (drummer) had to coordinate someone back home to find his cows that escaped his farm.

This year’s Winterlude will celebrate 175 years since the construction of the Rideau Canal, and the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The occasional snowflakes just added to the winter wonderland setting of trees with twinkling lights and skaters on the canal.

Well-bundled audience members crammed the front-of-stage, spilled over onto the ice surface, crowded the NAC’s second-storey balcony and thronged the Plaza Bridge overlooking the stage.

Randy was wearing fingerless gloves, and we opened with No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature. The crowd, which National Capital Commission officials optimistically estimated at 10,000, cheered and sang along with every hit. Let it Ride came off pretty good but the guitars started to go out of tune during Undun. I don’t think anyone but the band could really tell.

Winterlude In Ottawa

Hey it’s cold and the ice is frozen! Will the Randy Bachman Band ice skate tomorrow??
It’s hard to imagine that the Rideau Canal was liquid a week ago. Tomorrow we are playing at the American Express Bowl, on the ice of the Ridea Canal! The stage is actually on the ice. It’s a cool -15 here in Ottawa tonight, and on our way in from the airport we saw people skating down the canal.
Our set of Guess Who and BTO hits starts at 7pm and I guess people can skate right up to the stage.

I will try to post some pictures if I can figure out how to upload them from my hotel room.

An Evening To Remember- with Sarah McLachlan

My cousin Mary Ann died on the Friday before the Canadian Cancer Society Gala fundraiser. She had breast Cancer which had been in remission for over a year. It came back and in eight days she was gone. I dedicated “The Ride Of Your Life” to Mary Ann and I was almost too choked up to sing, but as I started to play I felt a spirit of strength and closing my eyes I delivered the song to an already emotional audience. People told me after they were in tears during the song but it’s no wonder because so many of the guests have been directly affected by Cancer in one way or another. I soberly introduced cancer survivor, MLA Sindi Hawkins. Sindi not only told her incredible story but introduced a young woman who shared her hospital room. Genevieve modeled internationally and before she was diagnosed she was blonde. Eventually, bald from radiation treatment she had a stem cell transplant from her brother and tohere on the podium she stood with curly brown locks . . . just like her brother’s hair.

The TV personality from Global TV had taken ill and I was asked to co-host the event with actor Nancy Robertson. Nancy is plays Wanda on CTV’s Corner Gas and is actually married to comedian, Brent Butt the star of Corner Gas. Nancy apologized to the glitzy crowd for nagging them but said she was recently married and needed the practice. LOL

The live auction at the Gala was memorable because my wife actually had the guts to get up in front of the entire black tie room and challenged the bidders. The year before I had offered myself, performing an up close and alone show as an auction , and to my surprise I was auctioned off for $5000.00.
So my lovely wife, Laurel, powered by a couple flutes of champagne, she said ” For a year I’ve been sleeping with a five thousand dollar man, and tonight I’d love to sleep with a ten thousand dollar man”.

I can’t begin to tell you how embarrassed I was. What if nobody bid? I wanted to go hide, I was exposed. Time slowed to a wet watercolour and my face flushed as I scanned the room for uplifted paddles. I can’t remember how long I waited in that trance-like state. I do know that I was auctioned for ten thousand two hundred dollars. My wife would be going home with a ten thousand dollar man.

I was escorted and introduced to Sarah McLachlan, before the show and when Sarah saw me she said “Oh Hi, I thought you looked familiar”. That was so cool, Sarah McLachlan recognizing me, I suddenly remembered that we had crossed paths on a few other occasions. We had a remarkably comfortable chat and I thanked her for supporting a cause that I had been an honourary chairperson for 4 years. Sarah’s eye’s sparkled with a genuine look of gratitude and it struck me that this same magnetic charm must be a factor in her incredible success.

I was invited to sit at a sponsor’s table. Suzanne and Gary from Tentnology have had Laurel and I every year at their table. This year we had front row seats to watch Sarah McLachlan’s set. What a thrill to watch the Lilith Fair Diva so close. Her sweet breathy voice trilled familiar melodies that made every person in the room glad they spent the big bucks to attend this memorable function. It truly was a “Night To Remember”.

The band is in the dressing room as I type this. Tonight was BTO Fan night. We added songs into the set that we rarely play.
Randy’s playing and phrasing was cool and growly tonight. New songs and peers in the crowd brought out the best of the band.

Mattias from the Swedish Band “Soundtrack of Our Lives” joined us on stage for 5 songs. The place went crazy. Check out the Theatre.

Lobby call is at 6:45am so I will update the blog from Gotenberg.
