Vancouver Music Industry Awards Gala – The Colin Arthur Band

Vancouver Music Industry Awards Gala – The Colin Arthur Band

The invitation said: “Party like a rock star.” But singer-guitarist Randy Bachman, 66, wasn’t at the Vancouver Music Industry (VMI) gala this week to receive the Legend Award founded by local music-biz moguls Bruce Allen and Sam Feldman. The venerable rocker was touring with reunited musical partner Fred Turner. Still, gala-goers witnessed a 20-minute set of 12 Bachman-Turner Overdrive songs performed by the Colin Arthur Band. As for BTO’s iconic hit, Colin Arthur took care of much business when, as Colin Wiebe, he was creative-advertising chief at this newspaper and The Province.

Presenting the in-absentia award, Allen quoted Bachman:

“A lot of guys are in the music business, but I’m in the business of music.”

New Song Inspired By Michael Jackson’s Words

I saw the Jackson Five on the Flip Wilson television show in the 70’s and they inspired me.

Why? Because the little kid named Michael Jackson sang like a grown-up and it altered my thinking that up until that point, believed only adults could sing professionally. So if Donny Osmond and Michael Jackson could be famous singers so could I. It was a believable pursuit. Today the bar gets higher and higher due in part to shows like American Idol, America’s Top Model and So You Think You Can Dance. Do shows like these encourage the youth of today or wound their self esteem? The answer is, how the adults in their lives help them process the information. Parents of young athletes who encourage their little future hockey or baseball stars to watch professional sports and learn from their heroes help to shape a “can do” attitude. Why is it that parents of singers, and musicians are more likely to say “unless you are amazing you will never make it in the music or entertainment business” ?  Dreams do come true and no matter what you believe, it is detrimental to any child to limit their belief in any way.

This post is not a rant so let me get back to the inspiration of my new song. I heard Marlon Jackson quote his brother Michael’s words and the phrase cought my attention. I quickly wrote it down and and within 30 minutes I had the sketch of a new song done. All Access Members can hear the demo on the demo page.

Soccer Dance February 23

Get your tickets now - I’m warning you!!! It was a sellout last year and many people asked me why we didn’t get a bigger venue. The answer is silly - there weren’t any available. We went through the same situation this year. We almost got a larger hall in Cloverdale but it is quite a bit further out for people. Here is the info:

Wonderful Women

I recently played for the Women Alive conference and had a wonderful time. The MC was Laura-Lynn Tyler and she always makes me laugh so hard, I absolutely love working with her. The ladies had a very emotional day and by the comments I heard afterwords, it was a very meaningful and enriching program.

I’m always honoured to be the “token” guy at these events and luckily this time I brought my wife. When I sang the “Anniversary Song” for once I could validate my story by asking her to stand up and flash the diamond. (If you don’t know the story you’ll have to download “The Anniversary Song” and listen to the lyrics 🙂

Thanks to all the gals that worked so hard to make the event so spectacular!
